Ana Mendieta’s work has always inspired me, especially the primitive figures carved in mud banks. They suggest primordial art made before carved stone and ceramic became widespread. These images would be totally erased from history because they would disappear with the next rainfall or high tide. This concept of the earliest art was my inspiration for this series.
The Eroded Man and the Shell Man series are combined on this page. Both were made of colored plaster and various shells. They were allowed to gradually erode in a water filled tank. Periodically I would drain the tank and add more plaster to the form while trying to maintain the semblance of a crude head.
